Background of the Study:
Financial constraints play a crucial role in shaping healthcare-seeking behavior, particularly in regions where poverty is prevalent. In Taraba State, many households experience significant financial hardships that impede their ability to access medical care. High costs associated with consultations, diagnostic tests, medications, and transportation can deter individuals from seeking timely treatment, resulting in delayed diagnoses and worsened health outcomes (Okeke, 2023). The economic burden of healthcare is particularly acute among low-income families, who often have to choose between essential needs such as food and education versus medical expenses. This situation is exacerbated by a lack of comprehensive health insurance coverage, which forces many to pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services.
In Taraba State, these financial constraints are compounded by geographical challenges and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Rural communities, in particular, suffer from limited access to healthcare facilities and higher transportation costs, further discouraging care-seeking behavior. In addition, low levels of financial literacy and awareness about available financial support mechanisms contribute to a pervasive reluctance to invest in preventive care. Recent studies indicate that financial barriers are one of the most significant determinants of healthcare utilization, underscoring the need for integrated financial interventions alongside improvements in healthcare services (Aminu, 2024). This study aims to investigate the effect of financial constraints on the decision to seek medical care in Taraba State by examining income levels, healthcare costs, and individual health-seeking behaviors, and by evaluating the impact of financial barriers on health outcomes (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
In Taraba State, financial constraints are a major impediment to seeking timely medical care, resulting in poorer health outcomes and increased disease burden. Many residents, particularly those in low-income households, are forced to delay or forego treatment due to the high costs associated with healthcare services. The absence of affordable health insurance and financial assistance programs exacerbates this problem, leaving individuals to pay out-of-pocket for medical expenses (Umar, 2023). As a result, conditions that could be managed or prevented through early intervention often progress to more severe stages, increasing morbidity and mortality. The inability to access necessary healthcare not only affects individual well-being but also places a greater strain on the overall healthcare system. Despite various initiatives aimed at reducing healthcare costs, the persistent financial barriers continue to hinder effective healthcare utilization in Taraba State (Saleh, 2024). This study seeks to elucidate the relationship between financial constraints and healthcare-seeking behavior, with the goal of informing policies that can alleviate the economic burden and improve access to care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on rural and urban households in Taraba State. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias regarding income and healthcare expenditures, and the difficulty in isolating financial constraints from other influencing factors.
